Well... I found the cause and the solution! This model indeed has a physical SIM-card, inserted in the bottom of the device. You need a pair of very thin tweezers to pull away the sticker with the serial number on it. Then, using the same tweezers, remove the SIM from the device. Mine had visible staining on the contacts.…

Thanks for the comments @DougLap I revived an old iPhone 5S that is stuck on the latest iOS 12 and can confirm that the connection problems are indeed iOS 13 related. With the old iPhone Bluetooth worked without a problem and I was able to use the Bluetooth data connection for Traffic. Nice to know, but it does not solve…

Yes, it's on 13. So maybe these are separate issues. Or maybe not. Still, my device should show Traffic info over GPRS.
