How can I close TomTom GO from Android Auto?

When I run the application on Android auto there is no exit / close button. The only solution that worked was to uninstall tom tom go.

Not sure, if I understand your problem correctly. On the left side of that black bar below the map on your cars screen should be a white dot with a white circle. That brings you back to the main menu of AA. If you want to stop the navigation / voice instructions, tap the TT-map on your cars screen. Four buttons will appear at the top right. Tap the one on the right with the cross. That stops navigation. If you want to close TT completely, you have to do that on your phone. Unlock, bring up the tasker with the open apps, swipe away (or however your phone handles that).
If your car always automatically opens Tomtom Go right from the start, jump to the main menu by pressing the white circle at bottom left, choose another app like Waze or Maps, use it for navigation. The next time, your car should use that instead of TT. At least that is how my car handles it.
