Loading Routes/Tracks to SD Card vs Internal

maddscotmaddscot Posts: 6 [Apprentice Seeker]
I have created a route in My Drive and wish to save routes to the SD card if possible and desired. It seems the option to do this would only be via manual process as I could not find a setting or preference on device or the app/site to default to an SD card rather then the Rider 550 unit drive/storage. It seems I need to follow this process if creating in My Drive to store to the SD card:

1. Create track in My Drive
2. Save but do not select "Sync this route as a track with my devices"
3. Once saved, I can then select "Share Route" and download GPX file
4. Transfer GPX file to Rider 550 SD card via File Explorer (as it shows under Rider 550 in File Explorer) via USB connection. I would assume this would just be a direct copy into the SD card

I have a Garmin XT as well, and I do prefer using the TomTom Rider as My Drive makes it easy to create routes vs Base Camp or the other options I have used for the Garmin. Now I have to test if My Rider will import over correctly as a GPX file to the Garmin (perhaps best of both worlds?).

    Hi
    @maddscot
    Welcome to the site....
By 'My Drive' do you mean the MyDrive Smartphone APP or the MyDrive Web PC based Route planner ??? Here... https://mydrive.tomtom.com/
Maybe useful... If you use the Save & Sync option on the MyDrive Web Route Planner
For .GPX Tracks you can use Stops in the planning stage, but Stops are not displayed on the Map screen or the Route bar... The Save & Sync option saves a .GPX Track... it's basically a bread crumb track that you follow....

The earlier Rider 4xx Models have Bluetooth route transfer, but it was removed/replaced on the Rider 5xx devices with the Smartphone Messaging ??? I could never understand why a rider would want to receive/read a text message on a 4" screen or listen to a text message over a Headset while riding a Motorcycle....

It is easier to use the Share Route option in MyDrive to download the GPX file.

After this you can use the Garmin Drive App to send the route to your XT using your smartphone.

On your PC you can Use Garmin Explore to upload your route to the XT. Warning this feature still needs a lot of work. So, most people disable it.

On the XT only use the track and generate a route from it. Disable recalculation because it is sill to buggy and slow on a Garmin XT.

Thanks! This is what I had thought. I am comparing the Garmin XT and TomTom Rider 550 and have both units. I like the MyDrive mapping (much easier to use) and like I can save the .gpx file to any device. I am preferring the Garmin XT unit over the TomTom 550 due to screen size as the Garmin offerings in mapping are not genuinely user friendly and using Base Camp as well to convert is, I feel, a step that could be easier.

Final question, if I leave a route on the SD card (after importing to it) will the TomTom require me to import to the internal storage? Goal is to keep routes on SD card rather than filling up internal storage if possible.

    Thanks again and ride safe!

I believe I got my answer already > "When internal memory is full then SD card is used." if anyone can confirm that may put my never ending questioning to rest (HA!).
