Has any one been scammed by what they thought was the official Tom Tom technical help desk?
Recently I thought I was being helped by a Tom Tom technical department only to be sold an illegal pirated software of Webroot? It has led me to to report to Action Fraud.

Hello, I fear that I have been scammed by somebody selling me maps for my TomTom, this afternoon. I began by downloading MyDrive Connect in order to get updates for my TomTom. A chat window popped up telling me they were putting me through to their technician. My phone rang and the technician took over my laptop screen. The website had the TomTom logo at the top left corner and MyDrive Connect above that. I had no cause to disbelieve what was happening. It took some time to finish the download. They are apparently going to call me tomorrow to make sure the download completed.
All sounds OK, but I was uneasy with being pressurised into paying quite a lot for the download....which they did as a 'deal'....lifelong updates for the price of the three year option. Also, if the TomTom fails in any way, they will replace for free, apparently.
The point is, ithe had been such a struggle to get that far with trying to log in to the TomTom site (kept telling me my password etc didn't match etc) that I didn't want to go through the process again......and the sat nav had no maps on it.
Have I been scammed? What can I do? Should I confront them if they phone me tomorrow?

    Hi @coralpearce

Sorry to hear this. There is no way that Tomtom would have taken over your PC

Can you provide the Website addresses involved so that a it can be checked and followed up by Tomtom.

I'm afraid to say I fell for this some time ago. I did question the £90 fee for what was supposedly free most of the time & for something I doubt I'll use (IE: for foreign travel). When I initially baulked at the price he started to 'wipe' my entire Sat Nav device so I reluctantly paid up. Should've listened to my head. Anyway, lesson learned albeit a pricey one.

NEVER give remote access to your computer to ANYBODY. NEVER give them your phone number. NEVER pay them. NEVER login into your bank for them. If you have doubts - turn off the computer immediately, hang-up and turn off internet - then clean your computer from any software they installed.
If you don't know how to deal with it - find local IT specialist to help you to clean your PC.

But the best - do not fall into this scam, it is very easy to recognize if you use critical thinking.
