How to reinstall from scratch?

I have a Carminat unit in a Renault car. The card was untentinoally removed and is now totally fxxxxxd. I guess it needs to be formated and the card reinstalled again from scratch.
How do I do that? a guide would be useful.
When trying to make a security copy in TOM TOM HOME it also fails saying that the unit is not connected. But I can see the SD card in the cardreader and also see files in windows explorer.
All help would be appreciated.
