I raised this issue A YEAR AGO and still no update to fix it. Absolutely ridiculous. I won't be buying TomTom again.0
-
just bought mine last week, absolutely useless to me - Already had issues not finding postcodes as it is a farm etc. I bought this to attend breakdowns , I have lost business as the tom tom cant find the address as no street names just post codes
GUTTED0 -
I find it ridiculous that this is still being offered for sale despite major issues with its performance. GET IT FIXED TOMTOM!0

Is anyone aware of a software update to enable the Start 52 to accept postcodes only? As it is, it is useless to me in my rural area, something I discovered too late to return it and get a different model.
Also, can anyone tell me how to enter mapcodes? The method suggested by TomTom on their help pages doesn't work. When I press 'search', it doesn't come up with a keyboard and I have to go into the 'enter town or postcode' routine and entering a mapcode comes up with ridiculous and totally inaccurate suggestions.
I feel very disappointed and let down by TomTom after many years of using my XL, only changed because map updates were stopped.0 -

I started this thread a year ago and was assured there would be an update. The last time I contacted TomTom, a couple of months ago, I got the answer 'Oh, didn't the last update solve it? Very sorry, we're still working on it' or words to that effect. Yes, I tried the mapcodes. It's completely USELESS. The fact that they're still selling this model with such a serious fault is beyond belief. They're just not interested.1

Thank you millerart. I've been reading the whole thread with great interest and a sinking feeling this morning. It would seem that I've thrown away my money and bought something that is utterly useless to me. I spent the whole weekend in the Lake District having to find places on Google Earth from their postcodes and then attempt to put a marker down on the TomTom map, save it and name it. For Start 52 users the often seen "for satnav use postcode etc etc" is meaningless.
As an experiment last night, on my mobile phone's Google Maps I typed in a Co-Op store in my old village in the Midlands. It 'knew' the store, immediately found it and within 30 seconds from start to finish I had a route planned. If only Google Maps would market a stand-alone satnav with all of the good features of TomTom, and I don't think I'm alone in this thought.
Thank you for your much appreciated efforts on our behalf.0 -
Thank you, but I bought it from Amazon quite a while ago.0

It is quite clear that this product is "Not fit for the purpose". You are entitled to send it back to the retailer for a full refund - no ifs, no buts, no alternative products. That is the LAW.
The manufacturer's and retailers warranties and terms and conditions are completely irrelevant!
Don't forget to write a bad review - explaining WHY you are giving the product only 1 star (it would be NO stars if that were possible!)0 -
Just read through this thread with dismay... I thought I was doing something wrong trying to get the start 52 to search a postcode, a simple task which my previous cheap Asda £29.99 sat nav did effortlessly!..
Now I've read this and realise I've wasted my money on this Tom Tom start 52.. well done Tom Tom, my one and only time purchasing your products.. never again..2 -
Yeah, I should had read your reviews before I bought the Start 52. Same issue here, very annoying. The funny thing is, even free android apps can navigate you without address, so excuse my language, but WTF??? It costed me 80 pound...1

What a pain! I have to search for postcode and get Latitude and Longitude from Google Maps then enter it into the Start 52. I won't buy a TomTom again if they can't be bothered to sort this out with a simple update. https://www.wikihow.com/Get-Latitude-and-Longitude-from-Google-Maps0

I've got a Start 52 and it's the worst Sat-Nav I've ever had. I still have a Start 20 and that's so much better; the GUI is uncluttered and responsive and it routes reasonably quickly. The Start 52, on the other hand, is slow, clunky and won't let me navigate to the postcode only, if you don't know the road-name then you're stuffed. I keep updating it in the hope that TT go back to the old interface and optimise some code but it's so slow and laggy it's pretty much useless.0

Hi Cussy,
Welcome to the Community!
This issue is still under investigation. We're working hard to find a solution as soon as possible.
Please note, that this issue only affects post codes that are not associated with a street name, mostly in rural areas.
Cheers, Mikko
In my case that's 70%-80% of Devon and Cornwall!0 -

Or do you mean newer (NAV 4) Start models?
My Start 20 is fine and even my ancient TT One (which incidentally routes a lot faster and is responsive to key-presses)0 -

Not sure why then this is now a surprise to you, but you could perhaps check in with the development team and find out whether they have identified the problem yet, and how far they are along with developing the solution.
Three years later and it still isn't fixed.0 -
Hi
Yes this is a long-standing problem....
The Postcode code search bug when using the latest Start devices is a real pain
Any search for a Postcode... You have to enter a road/street name to execute a search ??? Why....
If you know the road/street name and a house number you don't need the Postcode
Most people use a Postcode because they don't know the road/street name and house number
Isolated farms, Single building, Office blocks, Retail parks, Hospitals, New builds etc...
For me it renders the latest Start device useless in the UK
It's only the latest Start 42/52/62 Range that has this particular Step by Step search engine as the only option... All the previous NAV4 Models and the remaining Models in the NAV5 Range... The Via and GO Range have both the "Quick search" and "Step by Step search" as menu options
Tap 4Dot (.... Menu) --> Settings --> System --> Choose a search mode
(1).... Quick Search (Default & Best)
(2)... Step by Step

Decided to update my Start 52 today and found a new update - hoping the postcode issue was in this update but am sad to say still... after all this time Tom Tom have yet to add a 'fix' in an update - I have been having to revert to my phone when I can't find a location! Not hearing anything from Tom Tom about this long on going issue0

Just bought a Start 52 and having exactly the same problem - it does not recognise rural post codes, what a waste of money ! Did you get a refund when you took it back and said it was not fit for purpose?.0
-
I have a start 25 in the USA which works fine - this Start52 is pathetic the interface is user hostile and I can't use postcodes - WTF have Tom Tom been doing working hard to make a worse product1
