Can TomTom cause short circuit?

The power outlet / 12V socket of my car was broken because of the high power demand of my TomTom, my mechanic said. I have a TomTom START 42, it's about 10 months old and I've used it only about 15 times. My mechanic says I shouldn't use the TomTom anymore because when I plug it in, it takes so much power from the car batery that it causes short circuit and breaks the power outlet.
Is this possible? What could be done?

Thanks for your reactions. I am using the original cables and accesories. It's a good idea to contact te customer service, I will do so.
