Thanks Doug for the hint with the browser. I finally used Chrome and it worked fine. I was able to use the chat function and Neda from customer support was able to guide me through.
Solution: in order to get the updates for my Rider 2013 I needed to install TomTom Home on my computer. By connecting the device, the software showed me the available updates which I am currently downloading. However, due to the fact that my device does not have an SD-Card slot, I need to deinstall the map that originally was installed. This was done by the installation program right before installing the new map. So finally it is not an update but a new map which will be installed.

seems that Vikram's link does not work in MS Edge. By using Chrome instead, it worked.
