How to copy my places onto friends GPS?

photonzphotonz Posts: 5 [New Seeker]
Three family members have bought GO620s for a road trip, but it seems impossibly difficult to get my places from one GPS, onto the others. If I try to copy mydrive data, it comes as a gz file, which is incompatible to load onto the other mydrive account, as it need to be a gpx file.

Surely there is a simple way to get the same places and routes copied onto different peoples GPSs when they are going on the same road trip? I've wasted days trying to do this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
    @photonz

    Installing 3rd party POI Categories... You use the MyDrive Web Route planner
    Here... https://mydrive.tomtom.com

    See Tomtom Video... How to import POIs, GPX files and Favourites in MyDrive

    Displaying Personal POIs on the Driving View/Map
    Be aware... You can't install the POI associated .BMP files
    You can only use the 5 Tomtom supplied generic Icons....

    13s1zlb8gssy.jpg
    But you can use one icon for for more than one POI category i.e... place all your fuel categories under one Icon, then if you tap on a nearby 'say' Fuel Icon a Quick menu opens --> Tap the 3Dot Icon for more options & more Information

    Setup... After installing your Personal or 3rd party POIs....Tap 4Dot (....Menu) --> Settings --> Appearance --> Show POI lists on the Map
    It says a restart is required, but I've never found it to be necessary
    After choosing the Generic Icon.. Tap the coloured (^) Icon screen top right... Pinch zoom the Map, the Generic POI Icons all appear live and working
    Note... The Generic POI Icons disappear when the Map is highly zoomed out (I guess so you can scroll around a clear Map to find your location)
    The Icon reappear as you zoom back in again

    Here the Yellow Pentagon Icons --> National Trust
    fwsmyemsot57.jpg
    Searching an installed 3rd party POI Category....
    The search engine is excellent you usually only need to type around three characters of the POI name for a hit...
    For example... I have loaded the 3rd party POI's for the National Trust... To show the POI's for "National Trust" on the map, work your way down to option (2)

    From the main screen
    Tap (....)4Dot Icon (Screen Bottom left)
    Swipe left or Tap the mid/right edge of the screen to go to and tap the MyPlaces Icon
    Scroll down and select the required POI Category For example "National Trust"
    You now have three options
    The Main search area turns blue and "National Trust" is offered with a flashing cursor
    Continue typing the name of the required "National Trust" site, Type Dud (Or as much of the word that's required for Dudmaston Hall appear at the top of the National trust list)
    Tap on the offered Dudmaston Hall and select the Drive Icon

    fvvl1hj389eu.jpg
    You also have two further options.....
    After the initial "National Trust" POI selection
    There's a dual Icon (screen bottom right) with Three Lines and Two circles

    o7rx4qycdyey.jpg
    (1)..... Tap the three Lines Icon (bottom right screen) and a list will appear of the "National Trust" sites in distance order
    (2)...... Tap the Two circle Icon for the "National Trust" sites POI's to appear on the screen (Pinch zoom for detail) (Note..... On the Start range its easier to tap the plus and minus buttons to zoom the map screen)
    as far as I'm aware it will show the nearest 60ish POI's around your location
    There is also a Keyboard Icon (screen bottom right) to return to the search window from the options (1) and (2)

    An example of the generic Icons on the search screen, the Icons are dynamic so the closer you zoom more icons appear

    Hi YamFazMan,

    Thanks very much for that into. Unfortunately I get to the point where I try to get TomtomPOI.exe to open my (name)_MyDrive.json.gz file, and my file comes up beside the open button, but nothing comes up in the main window, and the copy button does not become live. (i.e. I can only get to #1 on your instructions)

    Hi YFM,

    Thanks. It just won't open that gz file. It seems bizarre that there is no easy way to copy favorites between friends going on the same road trip. But then again quite a few features on my new 620 seem really backward and far less advanced than my old TomTom, that I bought over a decade ago.

    Do you know if there is any way to copy onto a memory card and transfer that between GPSs? This doesn't seem to be possible for My Places, or My routes that have been planned on the GPS, but there does seem to be an option for it if the My Route was originally done on a computer, then downloaded onto the GPS.

    Cheers

    Hi YFM,

    Thanks for that extra step, however that's the bit that's not working. When I select the file and click open, the file comes up beside the open button at the top, but nothing in the main box, and the copy button doesn't work (presumably because the file hasn't opened up so there is nothing to copy?).

    For the hours I've spent trying to get this to work I probably could have manually entered the 120 or so favourite points into three three new 620s.

    Do you know if there is any way to copy onto a memory card and transfer that between GPSs?

    Cheers

    Hi
    @photonz

    This is so strange, I can't get the .Ov2 POI file converter tool not to work ???

    The only way I can get the results you are seeing, is to save the (Your user name goes here)_MyDrive.json.gz file without any Myplaces created

    I opened the MDW (MyDive Web Route Planner) deleted all of my MyPlaces and saved the .json.gz file

    Now when I process the json.gz file with the .Ov2 POI file converter I get the same results as you are seeing....

    Don't shoot the messenger for asking a daft question......
    But does the MDW account you have been saving the .json.gz file from, actually have any MyPlaces locations created ???

    Hi YFM,

    I have around 70 places under favourites in My Places, but nothing under POI.

    I also have quite a few My Routes, though for some reason, the ones I put on the GPS don't seem to appear on TomTom My Drive on the computer, though any entered into the computer, do appear sync back onto the GPS. Mt Places seem to sync between My Drive on the computer and the GPS with no issues.

    In other words, My Places seem to sync in both directions, but My Routes seems to only sync in one direction from the computer onto the GPS, but not from the GPS back the to computer.

    I've tried downloading the file again but it at the same point the file name comes up at the top, but it won't allow me to copy. Though the last time I downloaded it, it seemed to have dropped the gz off the end of the file name, which it definitely had previously.

    Cheers

    @photonz @YamFazMan

    I had the same issue photonz referred to; i.e. open a Json.gz file (created on 10 Dec) and "nothing appears" in the main box.

    ( But it did work successfully with a json.gz created at the end of Oct)

    I was running the 0.9.4.1 version of TomTomPOI

    I downloaded the 0.9.5.1 version and it is now working correctly on my latest json.gz file.

    It did say in the update history of TomTom POI :

    v0.9.5
    Bypassed another / new bug in TomToms JSON.
    Version control switched to https
    64 bit version in MacOS (requirement for Catalina)

    Maybe that was the issue for you and you just need to download the latest version of TomTomPOI?

    Hi
    @GATYFADIYA

    What do you mean by different peoples GPSs ???
    Are they the same Manufacturer, all the same Model
    Or mixed Manufacturers and Models ???

    .ITN Route or .GPX Track

    Hi
    @GATYFADIYA

    (1)... Have you successfully saved the (Your user name goes here)_MyDrive.json.gz file to your desktop

    (2)... Then using the Tomtom MyPlaces to .Ov2 POI file converter... Have you managed to convert the file to a .Ov2 POI file and save it on your desktop ???

    When I say MyPlaces I mean the coloured Stars (For me Blue) that appear on the Tomtom Map display and are first items in the MyPlaces list before you scroll down to the Points of Interest (POI) lists
