Apprentice Traveler
Hi All,
I have a TomTom GO 520 (WiFi), registered to my account. We are travelling to the US next week, and this weekend went online to buy our US & Canada map.
Purchase failed - a problem with the profile. For some reason my location is locked in as United Kingdom so I was unable to purchase a map on the Australia site. Using information from these very forums, I attempted the purchase on the UK TomTom site. While it took a couple of days to come through (I learned patience with PayPal purchase delays, also on these forums), the purchase is now complete - Yahoo!
BUT... How do I load the map to the device?
All the references talk about downloading TomTom Home or TomTom MyDrive and connecting the unit to the computer. Well, this unit WILL NOT connect to the computer (PC front USB or back USB, laptop any USB). Also, it seems as it's a WiFi unit attaching to the computer shouldn't be necessary.
I found maps for download on the unit so have downloaded a USA / Canada map but I don't know if this is just something you can download without purchase (as there are many others listed for download, none of which I've purchases), or if I was only able to download because I have purchased that specific map??? How do I know?
And TomTom keeps telling me it's all up-to-date...
I really don't want to get to America and find we don't have a working map system. We will be doing a LOT of driving!
HELP!
Thank you in advance...

Hi @Leesree
The Go520 WiFi comes with World Maps
When purchased the loaded map would have had the appropriate map for the region where the purchase was made.
Say that you bought it in the U.K. then the Full European Map would be on the unit and the voices for the U.K. Now to add more maps you
Tap Menu ie 4dots
Tap Settings
Tap maps
Tap Add a map
You scroll through the list of World maps and select the one required and,if you are connected to WiFi the map is then downloaded to your unit. One issue is the size of the maps and it would be an idea if you would add some extra memory to the unit. Buy a Micro SD Class10 card size 16gb or maximum 32gb and go to Settings/Sustem and Format the memory card do it will accept Maps. It is recommended the memory cards are Major makes such as Sandisk, Samsung or similar as some more obscure makes have been known to not work in TT units.
You would need the extra memory if you have Europe on the device and wanted to add the USA as the maps together are too big for the internal memory.
All the maps you have download or are yet to download are free as they were included in the cost of the original purchase. The one thing to remember however is that the Traffic Facility on the unit only works in the Region where the unit was first purchased.
Regarding the unit turning itself off regularly I would do a Factory Reset and set the unit up again as you did out of the box. You will have to link the unit to the WiFi and have it log into your account so your Favourites, POI and Route files are synced back onto the unit. Go to the MyDrive website and log into your account to check all the Fav, POI and Route files are stored there
One tip is to download a small map such as Venezuela or Iraq to the units internal memory. If you leave that on the unit should you only have one other map on the device and there is a problem during an update then your unit will work normally as you have the small map to enable it to start. So if you lost your main map you can simply go to Add a Map and reinstall the lost map
Hope that helps

Hi all
@Leesree
Only to complete @DougLap message.
If I understand correctly you live in Australia and you bought a USA map on the UK site TomTom because your user account is registered as UK.
Your device is a GO520 Wifi, so you have nothing to buy. You have lifetime subscription for World maps and lifetime subscription for speed cameras and traffic.
Speed cameras and Traffic only work in the area where the device was purchased. So it will not work in the USA.
To use your USA map you must switch the maps, make the USA map active in your GO520. Your device may have several downloaded map files but only one active and usable at a time.
In your device ==> Main Menu (4Dots)/Settings/Maps/ and choose the map you want to use.
For your map purchase, request the refund to TomTom customer service who can also sort your TomTom account to solve the problem of country of residence.

Thank you everyone! This is honestly one of the better help forums I've used.
I've contacted TomTom support and they're refunding the map.
As an aside, they cannot amend the country but advised the workaround is to register the account with a different email address.
Cheers,
Leesree
PS. Pretty impressed with TomTom's support team too, quick response, very professional!3
