Thanks for your prompt answer will check tomorrow and thanks for the number. The on line manual page 17 is quite definite although these manuals do cover more than one model. Regards John0 -

SuperuserHi @johncrosley
The GO Premium X has an inbuilt Sim and this is used by the unit to get the traffic data and other data services.. The unit uses the Sim to connect to the TT servers and having advised where the Unit is the Servers then provide the Traffic data relevant for 50+ miles around where you are. The inbuilt sim is also used to receive information from your account such as a route you have created in MyDrive and sent to your unit etc. There are no costs to the owner for this facility.
The premium X also has the ability to connect to your phone by Bluetooth. If you do this when you have set it up if you Tap on the Phone name in Bluetooth you will see there are 3 options available by this method.
1 To use the unit as a handsfree phone system
2 If you download the My Drive App and have it running in the background the unit will also receive Messages and if asked read them out to you.
3 You can also set it to download Traffic and other Data services via Bluetooth which will use your Data allowance on the phone. If you select this option you will get a message that says that this facility will only be used by the Unit if the data connection via the unbuilt sim is not available.

SuperuserHi @johncrosley
The Tomtom devices do use 2g and it is just as well that they did not follow the advice of many contributors on here, as indicated by @dmulv, that they should update to 3g as 2g is such old technology.. Telenor have said they will turn 2g off in 2025 in the meantime they are turning 3g off in 2020 so that is what Norway are doing as of now I have not seen any definitive announcements re 2g in the UK..
You should remember that the Premium like a number of the other Tomtom units can also connect for Traffic via Bluetooth or via a Hotspot so there is good backup should 2g be turned off. Whilst this will result in the need to use your Data the demand for data needed for Traffic is very small and with the current trend to add more and more data to phone packages I don't see it as a major problem.
I have successfully linked my GO6200 based GO Camper to a Mifi when in an area with major road works and a Premier League match involving MU and the inevitable traffic chaos. At the same time there was a problem with inbuilt Sims being able to connect to the TT servers but via the Wifi I was helped to get to my destination getting around the chaos. Not long after I arrived at my destination the inbuilt Sim was up and running again.

“always connected” devices or connected by smart phone. Apparently “always connected” just means having an internal SIM card ‘though I don’t understand how they know where you are in order to send relevant data. When you are smart phone connected data is sent back to TomTom and it costs you money. I assumed the internal sim is receive only, if I am wrong perhaps some can explain further. One last question does anyone know the purpose of the small blue self adhesive film that comes in the same package as the screen protector?
Thanks in anticipation. John.

The only network shutdowns I've seen mentioned is for the 3G network in 2-3 years' time. Which is ironic, as many people here have been complaining about TomTom not upgrading to a 3G SIM

Surely you didn't think the Tomtom 'Lifetime' meant 'YOUR' natural life ???
What does “lifetime” mean?
Lifetime is the useful life of the device, which means the period of time that TomTom continues to support your device with software updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available any more. The useful life of the smartphone app means the period of time that TomTom continues to support the app with updates
