Fully charge the unit for about 2 hours before doing the following or have it on charge whilst you are doing it.
Take the unit outside well away from Buildings and Trees etc and with a clear view of the sky. Now turn the unit on and when ready hold the ON/OFF button down for about 20 seconds until you hear the drumroll sound then let the button go.
When the unit has restarted create a route and then leave the unit still in the open for at least 30 minutes to see if it locks onto the sats. Once it has it should lock on quicker in future. You should always test how it locks onto the sats when the unit has a clear view of the sky all around. It is said that if you leave the unit on a cars metal roof whilst doing the above this can speed up connection..

You don't say what Tomtom unit you have.
Try following.
