Ok Doug. Well I can get the screen with the writing on and press the switch 3 times which sets the screen but no cog just a diminished Tom Tom screen .

You should still have Lifetime Maps or actually was Lifetime updates for the map on the unit originally. If you have purchased any other maps and they had lifetime updates then the same will apply to them.
Contact Customer support to have your account sorted out if updates are not being offered.

the 3 taps is the tricky bit.

Have you tried it a number of times as the taps is the trick. They are quite quick taps.
I have flagged this for @VikramK or @lampard to see if they have any ideas and they can check the settings at Tomtom's end It will be tomorrow now.
