@MrTangerineMan
The Map cannot be split across the on-board Memory and a Micro SDHC Card it is installed on one or the other
The latest Full Europe Map is 8.9GB so an 8GB Memory Card is useless
A 16GB or 32GB (Max) is required
The GO 5100 has World Maps
You will have to install one of the small Maps onto the on-board Memory ... See bellow
The Map size exceeding the on-board Memory size is an unfortunate, but real Catch22 situation
The advantage of the small Map would be plenty of working space on the device and the smaller map will also act as a 'Keeper'... This will enable the device to keep running on the smaller Map and avoid the Catch22 situation No Maps Found Error, where the device won't boot-up past the No Maps Found Error to allow access to the 'Format option' to allow the use of a 16GB or 32GB Micro SDHC memory card
Also if you ever need to remove the Micro SDHC Card for any reason... Like transferring pre-planned routes via a Micro SDHC Card or Formatting a new/replacement Micro SDHC Card, the Keeper Map will allow the device to keep running
If required maybe @VikramK or @lampard the Forum Moderators will allocate a smaller Map to your Account

SuperuserHi @MrTangerineMan
It looks like the problem you have now has been caused by the Extra memory card only being 8gb and so would not take the update either. The Full European map is now circa 9gb. The first thing that the Map update does when it is ready to load the map is to delete the old map to make space it then looks to the Extra memory if there is not enough space on the internal map.
Here is a video on what to do if the No Maps available is shown
https://discussions.tomtom.com/en/discussion/1034305/what-to-do-if-your-device-displays-no-maps-found/p1?new=1
Because you have not got a Map on the internal memory you need to get one there in order to be able to Boot the unit up without any card in the Extra memory. Then you can insert a Bigger Micro SD Class 10 card, 16gb or max 32gb , and format it ready for a map.
If you follow the above video you need to find if you can load another small map to the device first. It does not matter what map as the purpose is to leave it on the internal memory where it will stay as a keeper and ensures that you can boot the unit up as it has a map. If you can do that then having loaded the small map you can look to load the European map once you have installed a bigger extra memory card.
If you cannot load a small map because it is not listed in your My Contents and cannot be selected then come back here and advise and we can see if we can get Tomtom to load a small map for you to show in My Contents and so available to load.
All the best.
Lets know how you get on.

Please to hear your up and away.
I trust you have put any small map on the internal memory so that if there is a problem with the extra memory card your unit has a map on it to be able to boot up with.
