What tomtom unit do you have and which country are you in..
You don't turn on traffic it should work. If you have a unit that requires you to connect it to you phone if you have set it up to use the MyDrive app then you need the phone on and the app working via bluetooth.
I have Model No 1EX00.
Its always been pretty good and reliable,
and it still is except for the speed camera alerts.
Which stopped working about a month or two ago.
I didnt notice at first that they werent working,
but now i'm getting a bit paranoid about the speed.
I found these instructions on GOOGLE ...
but i havent got very far with them yet.
I got as far as tapping the screen,
then i got a bit stuck.
1. Tap the screen to open the Main Menu.
2. Tap TomTom Services.
3. Tap Speed Cameras.
4. Tap Enable Alerts to switch on warnings or
Disable alerts to switch off warnings.
And i found somewhere on this site
some instructions to ENABLE and to DISABLE
the speed camera alert sound.
(which was a beep - beep on mine)
But i got nowhere trying to do it.
If the unit requires me to connect to the phone,
then i will try to do that.
I dont think it has bluetooth, but it might.
I just thought the speed camera info might need
to be updated every so often, cos the cameras
might change, or more might be put up.
Traffic and Cameras are part of Live services that you have to pay for.and were not free on the old units. Has your subscription expired?
When you Tap Enable Alert you get a list of different camera types ie Fixed or Mobile etc and you have to tap each one to select whether you want to be alerted and the sound for. it.
When you are on the normal screen and Tap it you then get Live Services bottom Left. if you tap that you see the next menu if you tap the Right arrow on the screen you get a Live Services Button. What do you gett there. Is it a message to say problem contact Customer Services?
Always use a Computer voice
(The Computer voices have a more comprehensive spoken instruction set)
Tap the 4Dot (.... Menu) -->

Also....
From the main screen... Tap (.... Menu) -> Setting -> Sounds & Warnings...
Set... 'Warning Type' to... Read Allowed... (Important... Needs a Computer Voice set in the Voices menu)
Speed Cameras & Hazards... Set to ON
The next 10 Setting ALL set to Always
The next 4 Settings ALL set to ON The device will now say....

'Red-light Camera'
'Accident Black-spots
‘Spoken Traffic delays’
Speed Cams
If you keep a check on the Traffic-bar... The device gives you a visual Warning of the next Fixed or Mobile Speed Camera many miles before you reach the camera
Even more info if in the 'Setting menus' you setup a Wide Traffic/Route Bar

I have the tom-tom here with me, but unfortunately its battery
is not very good, its Ok in the car as its normally plugged in
but it will only run for a few minutes on its own.
If i understand you rightly, speed camera alerts are a service
which has to be paid for, and not free on the old units.
Has my subscription expired? Well ive never had a subscription
as this tom-tom was given to me when my friend got a newer one.
I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I think that is
most likely exactly what the problem is. I did not know it was
a service which required payment. He never mentioned it, maybe
he didn't even know, the price might have included it to start
off.
Your post kind of suggests the newer ones dont need paying for
speed camera alerts.
The next time i am in the car i will try to check out the list
of cameras and the live services.
And maybe i should get a newer one.

Thanks for the tip about the computer voice, i had thought the
voice said the same stuff, whichever one you chose. I am going
to check that out.
Firstly I am not sure what actual model you have got as I don't recognise the Ref you gave. However if you have a look at Yamfazman's post here I suspect that you may not recognise the Icons displayed as I think you may have one of the old style models.. They the Icons which are on the new models and you will find it will take a little time to learn the new system.
One tip though the Start Models 42/52/62 only have a search system called Step By Step and this has a problem with Post Codes in Rural areas as you have to know and input the Road name as well. Go for one of the other Models ie Basic, Essential or Go as these allow you to set a search method called Quick Search which does not have this problem.
Also take note that some models require you to connect to your Smart Phone as you are travelling in order to get up to date Traffic information whilst some like the GO 5200 and GO 6200 have an inbuilt Mobile Sim which means you can get Traffic without a phone involved. Also with these 2 models you do not pay annually for Cameras information.
