What is the best way to keep the hr value on screen?

    It is not reading your HR while in clock mode to preserve battery life, it is only taking a reading once every 10 minutes for 24/7 activity recording purposes. You can either go into Sensors>Heart and leave it here and the HR will be displayed or go to an activity start screen and leave it here to see it. You can also start an activity in gym mode, which uses no other sensors and the battery will last for close to 24 hours with just HR on.
