Dots on Streets

Possibly an ignorant question, but what do the little dots mean that appear on some roads on the TomTom maps, but not on others? I thought they might be 100m markers ... but why on some roads and not others. In the attached picture, the same road in the same area has dots on one section, and not on the other.

[email protected] what page is that shown in the manual?

[email protected] your link goes to various symbols but I could not find the one in question

What the manual needs is a comprehensive map key so we can find anything seen on a map we do not know. All in one place. And the icons.

I have combed the manual for all the categories of icons and listed the page numbers but it is still very difficult for newbies to find stuff.

Um, I don't think so ... cars can and do drive on all those roads (in my sample pic)...

Thanks, interesting reading, but I still can't find any reference to what the dots mean ...

    Hi daletowe,

The dots indeed signify road restrictions for normal vehicles. Most often these roads would be only for pedestrians and bicycles, etc. Some might also be private roads.

Have you tried if you can plan a route through these?

    Cheers, Mikko

    Dear Mikko,
I'm sorry to say that the dots in MyDrive are a mystery to me. What ever they show it's quite different from what devices and apps show. Dots must be a top-secret information in MyDrive.

Ah, okay. Interesting indeed this difference between PND and MDW. On the PND it usually means not accessible by cars/or only for people living there. But apparently on MDW it means something different. Good catch :).

Here it seems to mean private terrain: https://www.google.nl/maps/@51.4397992,5.4710475,3a,52.2y,21.04h,89.26t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s2OXKXbNeOf-ftiiJuFrP7A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=nl. Also it seems that grey roads with dots are not accessible by cars, but white roads with dots can be sometimes.

And here it seems to to mean not accessible by cars, only for people living there: https://www.google.nl/maps/@51.4196724,5.4203218,3a,27y,78.83h,83.78t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sEVPtpYZhmDxGwy_xIH1GDQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=nl.

In the first post of this topic this is the Google Streetview image: https://www.google.nl/maps/@-26.1586151,28.1240537,3a,18.7y,117.62h,84.62t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssMnYCu4jXFI-IHxDnp9WYg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1?hl=nl. So also seems to be private terrain, with a gate.

    Hi Mikko,

I guess each area/country is slightly different. There does not seem to be much consistency in the use of the dots on the South African maps. Some roads with dots are completely public and accessible without restriction to everyone and all vehicles. Others are in "gated communities", but these communities almost always allow public access to all vehicles (yes, lots of things are not completely "normal" in South Africa!). But thanks all the same. I guess I can just take it that "in theory" dotted roads are supposed to be in some way restricted...

    Hi all,

Thanks for all your feedback regarding this!

I'll try to get some more info about this. I think the bottom line, however, is whether routing is working as it should on these roads. If you find a routing issue relating to these dotted roads, you've most likely spotted a map error. Please, report it to our map team with the MapShare Reporter .

    Cheers, Mikko
