Tom Tom One will not start up.

I have tried to start up my tom tom one but it will not switch on. I have tried holding the on button down for 20 seconds - looked for a reset pin hole, but there is not one on this model. It is charged up, as I went for a long drive with it plugged in and I know the charger unit in the car is live as I have had other things connected to it since. Since it was bought it never really held a great charge - is that normal?

Any help.

Doesn't sound good at all. Maybe the battery is dead. What happens if you try to press and hold the ON button for like a minute or so?

Thank you for your responce. I tried holding the button down for 1 min, while it was on charge.  An information page came up with details etc of the device. Nothing happened so i turned it off then on again and hey presto - it started. However i just managed to put in a destination and the screen froze and then switched off???? I had to hold the button in again for over 30 secs, i got to the same point and then it froze again and then switched itself off again.

Is this a battery prob?? Is it repairable??

Most probably battery. What happens when you connect it to the PC, switch it on, tap YES to connect? Is it switching off as well?

Thank you Zsolt for your responce. After plugging into my computer, the tomtom switched on with a drum sound, It showed a white background with an orange centre peice with a pick of the tomtom with a lead connected - but that is all it does.

Odd. Sounds like it doesn't recognize the internal storage.

Does that mean that i need a new tomtom or can it be repaired?

Why do you say your Tomtom doesnt have a reset button, my Tomtom One 3rd edition has one on it's bottom.

I'm having EXACTLY that problem with my TomTom One, same screen and everything - also no reset button on it.  This also happened on my XL and IQ so 3rd Tom Tom in 5 years - if I can't get a solution here, it's off to the bin (avoiding toll roads) and over to Garmin.....

There is nothing on the bottom of my tom tom only the inlet charger.I know exactly how you feel Cario. I am quite disappointed with tom tom - my brother in law is also having the same problem. Glad to know it is not just me.

If no reset button then hold the power button about 15 seconds till you hear the drum sounds.
  • cariocario Posts: 4 [Neophyte Traveler]
that didn't work, it wouldn't start at all except for the orange screen referred to by previous post - eventually, by connnecting to the pc and running update several times, on about the 4th time it started up - for how long, who knows - my confidence isn't great!

Thank you for your response, but as I have said in an earlier post - I have tried this but it did not work - I have also tried to plug it into my computer but still nothing.  Any ideas???

keep trying with the pc - I left it plugged into pc for about an hour, then tried the updates.  I did this around 3 more times before it actually responded, but the problem to start with sounded exactly the same as yours, so persistence may be the answer!

Have you tried resetting the unit by holding the power button about 20 seconds till you hear the drum sounds?

My tom tom one 1st edition will not start even when pressing the reset button for 20 secs. There is also no sign of red light. Further unfortunately it was in the car last night when the weather was freezing under my seat in a bag. Will this damage the navigator. Any idea to solve this problem

It may be just the battery or car charger / adapter. Have you tried to plug the gps into your computer to charge it yet.  Cold / Hot enviroment is harder on the battery then the actual gps.

Hi, i'm having a similar problem. Tomtom One IQ starts up and goes to the set up pages. Asks for country, date, time then then screen just shows garbage. Tried factory reset (hold button down 20 secs), and tried a restore from tomtoms pages. Still no joy. Worked fine up to the other night then - nothing. The battery is ok, lasts about an hour and a half, and it hasnt been dropped or otherwise abused. So is it a new tomtom then, or is there a work around?

Try running the Clear Flash tool. Run it 3 times. Get it here:

And in case dhn's solution didn't help:

    1. Save everything from the device, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

    2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. Use the COMPLETE format, not the quick. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12412/

    3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again. At this point you might have to disconnect the device a few times and switch it ON/OFF to enable it to setup some important stuff.

    4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the device (also the maps if that didn't download either).

Hi, thanks for the info. I've run the tools, formatted, and re-installed, but no joy. It starts up, asks for language, etc, gets as far as set time. When I set the time it stops for a while, and then re-sets back to the beginning. I assume that formatting will clear out the cache as well, so I havent run the cache clearing tool ( and the instructions aren't that clear anyway). So I'm a bit baffled. Looking like a new Tomtom I'm afraid. Although its a few years old, it hasn't really done much work at all, so I'm a bit miffed at it. Thanks for the assist though. If there's anything else you can think of, please let me know, its goosed anyway so I cant do any more damage eh?

    Kind Regards

    Peter

When you put the stuff back, which folders actually do you restore from your backup?
  • TraylawTraylaw Posts: 3,865 [Renowned Wayfarer]
The looping problem may be a corrupted mapsettings.cfg file in the gps. Backing up the gps then reinstalling the application software and  map folder will not fix this because the file is in the map folder and the corrupted file just gets put back in the gps. .

Try renaming the mapsettings.cfg file to something else like mapsettings.dat. using windows explorer. Then reboot the gps. When the gps restarts it will see the missing configuration file a recreate a new clean version.  Note that you will have to go thru and re-setup the gps and your favorites will not be there because they too are stored in the mapsettings.cfg file. But if this fixes the problem, there is a procedure for restoring your favorites if you want.

Hi again. I've just gone through it all again. I've backed up, formatted, updated from TomTom, then replaced all the files from TomTom Home 'replace files from computer'. Its exactly the same.  A suggestio has been to  replace the map.cfg  file with a different name, sorry to be so dumb, but I dont seem to be able to find a file with that name! Where would I find that please?
