Go 620 Active Mag Mount necessary ?

Do I have to use the supplied Active Mag Mount or can I use my own holder (which grips top and bottom of device) and just power it with the supplied USB cable directly into the USB port. I don't want to attach to windscreen but I do have a nav holder which integrates well with my sports car dashboard
