Why pay for tomtom map updates

Have been using TomTom for years, why do I have to now Pay for map updates. Like so many companies now they expect their customers to pay for the last two years.
This will be my last TomTom product

What TT unit do you have and have you been benefiting from Lifetime map updates on it and the facility has suddenly stopped. Some old devices have always had the necessity to pay for updating maps but most devices, including the current range with World Maps, have lifetime updates.
