Rider 550 - Currently a brick: no connection to My Drive via USB or WiFi

My device will is not visible via any form of connection. It states it is connected to my 2G Wifi and my Mac is happily planted there. The USB connection is direct. Following the skinny instructions for the creation of a TomTom configuration item in System preferences | Network fails. My VPN is off. The device states it is logged in to my MyDrive account I am really not sure what I could be missing, but it is really getting frustrating.

I want to get my device connected and start creating routes and uploading waypoints. Is that too much to ask for a supposed market-leading product? Given direct support is not an option, can someone point me to the steps I need to get past step 1. Many thanks.
