Start 50 updating of lifetime maps

Looking at a second-hand 'Start 50'. The seller says that as it hasn't been updated for over 36 months, free Lifetime maps are no longer available. Maps would cost for the device. Is this really the case? The current map on it is from 2018. If it has never been connected to an account, does this make any difference? Hoping someone can help. Many thanks in advance.

    The Start 50 has lifetime updates, it's a pity that the seller does not update from time to time.
    The only obligation is to create a Tomtom account and then connect the GPS to your computer.

    So, if I understand you correctly, if I created an account and connected the Start 50 GPS, it would allow me to download maps for free?
    I think the original map on the unit would have been Europe including Great Britain. Does that sound correct?

    The map of Great Britain is included in the map of Europe.

    Yes, you must create an account install the Mydrive connect https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/mydrive-connect/ software to download your maps.
