External mic - not working?

Hi, I acquired the external mic lead from TT last year but only getting round to trying it now. I have a purple panda mic plugged in and have set the camera to external mic but no sound is being recorded? I have tested the mic in my phone and it works. Any ideas please?

    Thanks I have looked but I can only think that the mic cable supplied direct by tomtom is deficient.
