usb device malfunctioned

Hi, I've just borrowed a family members satnav for a few weeks until I buy a better one, but noticed the maps are 33 months old, so I downloaded the MyDrive app for my laptop so I could update the maps. Now when i insert the satnav in to the usb port i get a message from windows saying the usb device malfunctioned. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, I've troubleshooted the usb drives, updated my laptop.. all to the same problem. any ideas?? the satnav is a TomTom 4EN52 Z1230

    What are the 1st 2 characters of the serial number ??? The two letters define the Tomtom Model....

    NOT the 4EN52 Z1230 Number....
