App going mute after a few minutes (not connected to bluetooth)

I use the app on a Huawei P20 Pro running Android 10.

The app works for the first few minutes, but after that it goes mute. It started about a month ago but now it's always like this: I have tried about a dozen times and this always happens now, even if I have just rebooted the phone.

Note I am not connecting it to any Bluetooth device - the audio comes out of the phone speaker (for only the first few minutes, though) so it cannot be a bluetooth issue.

I have tried the usual IT approach of uninstalling and reinstalling the app, nothing.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

    I have found it is better to never connect any device to my car. Just too iffy and unpredictable. But then that is just me.

    I guess I wasn't clear. The phone is not connected to anything via bluetooth: not the car, not a headset, not speaker, nothing, so it is NOT a bluetooth issue. The sound should come out of the phone internal speaker; it does for a few minutes, then it goes mute.
