If you can see a map in Add a Map I would select a small one like Iceland. That will enable you to then run the device normally and add whatever map you want.
One tip is leave the Iceland map on the unit in order to ensure that if you have an issue during an update, which should be done one at a time, that the device has a good map so will work normally and the lost map can be reloaded.
Regrettably a Chromebook will not work with the unit so you will need to seek the aid of a friend if it becomes necessary to use with a PC with My Drive Connect on it.
If you have an extra memory card installed I would remove it whilst trying to sort the issue out.
