My tomtom runner no longer provides accurate distance information

It's an 8RS00 so I guess the answer is tough luck...
I've done a factory reset and that hasn't helped. Tested it along side a phone running endomondo which gave the correct values on my most recent run.
Probably a bad watch but it would be weird for the GPS chip to go bad. Are you syncing it at least every three days to get the latest GPS data and letting it get a good lock before starting? The phone may be just as inaccurate, how are you comparing the distance, is it on a measured course?
