When I start my navigator up in the car, it says "connecting to computer", but when I try connecting it to the computer it doesn't connect and I can't update it. Why is it trying to connect to the computer when it's to be in use, but wont connect to the computer when it's supposed to?

This usually happens when you try to charge the device in a car through a USB port instead of a CLA.
Please see the advice provided in the video-

The USB cord is the only power cord that came with the navigator. It also came with a car cigarette lighter socket that the USB port plugs into to power the navigator.

A car cigarette lighter is a CLA ( cigarette lighter adapter).
What @VikramK is saying is that what you are describing is what can happen if you do not use the provided CLA but plug the USB end of the cable directly into a USB socket in the car to power the Device.
Doing that does not provide enough power to the device to run and charge it and also can trick the device into thinking it has been connected to a PC.
