SuperuserHi @Jostacey
It is possible to create a route on your device.
If you create a route as normal on the device from where you are to the final destination you can then add waypoints to the route.
Having created the initial A to B route then:-
Tap Menu
Tap Search
When you now select a search result the position appears on the map on the screen with a menu next to it with Drive on right hand end.
If you just tap Drive the new search result will now be your new final destination and your previous route will have been replaced.
If instead of Tapping Drive you Tap the 3 vertical dots next to Drive a second menu will appear which includes an option to Add to Current Route. You will now have a route with a waypoint via which that route must pass. You can continue to add a number of search results as waypoints to the same route.
You can add one or more of your saved MyPlaces to the route by again after selecting them you Tap the 3 dots against Drive. Similarly you can search any 3rd Party POI files you have loaded on the device and add the search results as waypoints.
You can also find a position on the map you want to visit and when you press and hold that position for a second or so a marker will appear on the map. If the marker is not accompanied by a sub menu the Tap the mark and again use the 3 dot Submenu to add the position to the current route.
When you have finished adding waypoints you can then Tap Drive or
Tap Menu
Tap Current Route
Tap Add to My Routes.
When you save a route created on the device you will see in MyRoutes that the Arrow head next to the route name has a solid shaft not a dotted shaft. This is because the route has been saved as an .itn file not a .gpx file. The advantage of an .itn file is when you select it from the My Routes folder the route will take note of existing Traffic data and changes to that data during the journey. In other words it acts as you would normally the device to work. A .gpx file will follow exactly the route defined and will not change because of traffic data. Also if you take a wrong turning it will take you back to the place the error was made or will continue to try to take you along a road that is closed unless you change the route file.
One thing to be aware of is that a route file created on the device will not sync back to your My Drive Account.
Hope this helps

Glad you are sorted.
Keep safe from the fires which are getting a lot of news coverage here in the U.K. Our PM is going to a Caribbean Island for the holidays so wonder what disaster we have coming our way. More likely flooding than fires. 😂😂
Have a Great Christmas and hope 2020 is better than 2019 is finishing your way.

Further to Dougs post....
I you want to plan a route route directly on the Map using the North-up overview planning Map Screen ....
Or add a 'Stop' to Create a diversion by adding a Stop or Stops
With a route planned
Tap on the Direction of Travel Icon (Above the Plus & Minus Icons) to toggle the North-up overview planning Map and the Driving Map
Pinch zoom to the required location 'Long Tap' (Tap and hold for +1 second) on the Location --> A quick menu opens --> Tap the 3Dot icon --> Choose 'Add to Current Route'
The device will calculate your route to include your new location
Saving the Route
'Quick Tap' anywhere on the Route --> A quick menu opens --> Tap the 3Dot icon --> Manage route --> Add to my Routes.... Edit the route name as required or simply Tap Add
Note... (1) A 'Quick Tap' and 'Long Tap' of the screen gives different menu options
