SuperuserHi @bill1953
Firstly when you insert the card you should be asked about formatting it in the unit and you should ask for it to be formatted for Maps. If you do not get asked then turn the unit Off and then On again and you may then be asked. If you still don't get asked make sure the card if fully inserted. You will probably need something to help you push it fully into the slot. If you do it very slowly you should feel a click as it locks in.If that still does not result in you being asked look in Settings for an option to Format Memory Card.
When you then ask the unit to process the update the software checks for enough space on the internal memory first and when there is not enough it then loads the whole map on the extra memory card. It does not split the map across the 2 memories.
Please you are getting sorted.

Are you sure there is no memory slot Either on the bottom, hidden under the slot cover on the bottom which flicks out or by the USB socket.
See the images in @yamfazman 's in the following.

If it does have a slot then a 16gb MicroSD Ciass 10 card from Sandisk, Samsung of similar major make obtained from a reliable source to avoid possible fakes will enable you to have the memory needed for the bigger update.

Have a look at the following particularly the video
http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25336/~/using-a-memory-card-with-a-tomtom-device
The compatible memory page on Tomtom says the Start 25 takes extra memory
What are the first 2 characters of the units serial number.

Next question. If I install a micro SD card will the new map use the internal memory and then put the overspill on the card or will the new map just be on the memory card?
