With the unit fully charged take it outside well away from Buildings and Trees etc with a clear view of the sky all around.
Start the unit and then when it is working hold the ON/OFF button down for about 20 seconds until you hear the drumroll sound then let the button go.
Now when it has restarted create a route on it and then leave it unmoved for about 30 minutes or so to see if it connects to the Sats. If you can leave it on a Car roof it seems to help but don't let it out of sight. Once it has locked on it should be quicker next time. Also keep it up to date with all the QuickGPSfix updates as they are to assist the unit find the Sats.
If you can possibly keep the unit on charge whilst it is searching for the sats that helps as a low battery strength prevents good location.
