Hi,
my network monitor show 3.65 Gb uploaded by TomTom myDrive Connect, what it charges to justify this suspicious amount of data?

    Hi @novemi

    I also use Kaspersky on my PCs. :)
    I think during the installation or update of the software MyDrive Connect (MDC) you have left enabled the background download of updates. We have this popup window during the MDC process.

    3.65GB, this seems to be a map. If you plug in your TomTom device you must have a map ready to be installed on your device. The files are on your PC in the MDC cache folder.

    Look at this TomTom FAQ for more explanation:
    https://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25181

    If you want to disable this optional feature uncheck the 2nd line, "Automatically download updates between...", see the picture below.

    Hi, thanks for your kind reply.
    In fact I have updates enabled in the background and it would be normal if the traffic detected by the monitor was in download but what the monitor highlights is traffic being uploaded; 3Gb of data that have been passed from my PC to external servers. This is worrying because there are two hypotheses:
    1. TomTom has transferred a large amount of data from my PC to its servers (what did they contain? It couldn't just be statistics on my movements!)
    2. Is there a security flaw in the program that allows others to use my network and data (backdoor?)

    Regards

    Hi @novemi

    Are you serious with your two hypotheses? ... I am a user like you, if I don't trust a software or a device, I do simple, I stop using it ...

    Do you think Kaspersky would allow this type of data theft? KIS class MyDrive Connect (MDC) as "safe" by default in its settings since always, like all serious security software.
    This is TomTom no Microsoft or Google, there is no hidden voluntary privacy option to prevent disabling. Of course TomTom retrieves information but its policy is very clear, see here:
    General:
    https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/privacy/
    Specific to software:
    https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/privacy/drive/#TomTomsoftwareusesyourlocation

    Go to see in the MDC cache folder, if you haven't deleted it you will find the files:
    ==> C:\Users\Your Username PC\AppData\Local\TomTom\HOME3\cache

    Our devices are considered as "Removable Network Adapters", not storage disks. MDC is the graphical interface for the exchange with TomTom servers. Files are stored on the PC before being sent to your TomTom device. And it's different from a conventional data download.

    Kaspersky shows you this activity with its network monitoring tools.
    I installed the map of Africa (1105 MB) as an example.

    Download on the PC in the cache folder:
    ==> C:\Users\Your Username PC\AppData\Local\TomTom\HOME3\cache

    Install on my TomTom device (GO5100)

    Process completed and successful.
