    Hi Shell

The 'What3Words' is a feature which will first be implemented for our B2B operations, unfortunately we don't have plans to release it for the consumer products.

But if anything changes I will be happy to announce it here.

    Regards
    Vikram :)

    Hi VikramK,
Thank you for your reply. However the press release states the following,

"what3words addressing will roll-out to TomTom Consumer and Automotive customers in the second half of 2018."

As you can see it clearly states Consumer and Automotive customers.

    Best Regards.

    Hi Shell

I know, I read it when it was published. :)

We don't have a confirmation for this yet, especially for the consumer products.

If there is any news, I will surely announce it here..

    Thanks
    Vikram :)

I've just been directed here from this thread: When will iOS TomTom GO and MyDrive support what3words?

It is disgusting that the TomTom press team can release such lies that what3words will be available for both Consumer and Automotive customers when moderators of the official TomTom forum say that TomTom has no plans to release what3words for the consumer products.

I can use a "Mapcode" which is a similar location addressing system on my device (Go 6200). :grinning: See page 65 of the manual for instructions.

We used to be able to use Mapcodes on MyDrive (web) but after an update back in July 2017 for search improvements :grinning: this facility was no longer available which is a pity as it was a facility I used as we often drive to rural destinations at night where it can become an issue to locate our final destination based on post codes which may take you up to 1/2 mile away.................

I know we can still input map codes on the PND itself, however being a bit lazy (and easier to use a PC keyboard too) I prefer to use MyDrive first and then send the location to the device, so that when we get into the car we are then ready to go........... :grinning:

A TT moderator (now retired @MikkkoK) said back in July 2017:

    "Hi Bobby,

I got a confirmation that this indeed has to do with the recent release. The team is aware of this and will address the matter in a later release. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact release date.

    Cheers, Mikko"

Still waiting almost 1 1/2 years later !!! :persevere:

    Hi @oash

Have you tried Mapcodes. They work on the Go Navigation app and you can cut and paste the codes from the Mapcode App to the Navigation App.

If you input DH.FX into search and accept first search result it takes you to the middle gate at front of Buckingham Palace. Shorter than a Postcode and 3 words. It works world wide and can basically identify a parking bay in a car park.

Any update as to the addition of what3words to TomTom consumer devices?

I am a recent convert to what3words. Although you can’t input the word string directly, there is a way to use it on my TomTom GO (iPhone).

Using the what3words App to gain the word string, you then select Navigate.

The App then asks which Navigation App you wish to use, which includes a TomTom option (along with Google Maps and Apple Maps).
If you select TomTom, it opens the App and loads the route. Perfect 👍

If you select Google Maps, it also displays the latitude/longitude which you can type straight into your car GPS (a little longer, but workable, especially for a destination without a full street address that TomTom will recognise).

    Hi @bajohno

Have you tried the Mapcode App. You can view precise locations world wide on Google Satellite type map when you use Hybrid mode and get a Mapcode which you can put in your Tomtom unit, not in My Drive though. Not sure if you have to put NSW in front but if you input JC.JL, include the full stop, you should be offered a route to the Underground parking at the Sydney Opera House end of MacQuarie Street. Here in the UK I just put in DH.FX and I am routed to the middle gate at the front of Buckingham Palace.

Mapcodes are virtually able to pinpoint a parking bay in a Car Park and are Tomtom specific having been invented by Tomtom years ago..

    Hi @ DougLap

Thanks, I’ve had a quick look look at it. I have not been able to get Tom Tom or Google Maps to accept the Map Code. Also what3words would appear to have a better search function, it will recognise landmarks and businesses.

So far what3words looks fairly straightforward. I think I might even be able to get my directionally-challenged wife using it to iMessage me her location when she goes shopping in town.....😋

If it works, stick with it.

    Cheers, bajohno

    Ok @ DougLap

Got it working. Both Apps seem much the same result on my TomTom GO.

The interesting bit will be to see if my car GPS (non TomTom) takes it.

    Hi @bajohno

Mapcodes only work on Tomtom units.
