I went online to update my satnav and gave contact details. This was followed by a call from a 'technician' who said he would help me. He was unable to help me update and then I allowed him to access my laptop. After a long time, about 45 mins, he said I needed the services of a microsoft engineer to remove malware and reconfigure my laptop. As this was going to cost money I was suspicious. I don't know if this man, Michael Hill is genuine but it seems very strange. I wanted to contact Tom Tom but couldn't find a way of doing so.

Thank you for reporting this to us. I have forwarded your incident to our Corporate Security.
As the agent already explained, they will never remotely access a customer's computer without permission. Also remote access is only used after we have been contacted by a customer and regular troubleshooting steps have failed.
Greetings,
Jürgen
