The Europe Map for my GO 5000 = 7.444 GB
My fibre Internet Connection = 110Mb/s (Speed Test check)
Using Stopwatch to time Download Only The Europe Map... 9 Mins 48 Seconds
Results from the download Speed/Size/Time calculator........ 9 Mins 41 seconds
The full Download and Install, GO 5000 ready to use 56 Mins 26 seconds ___________________________________________
GO 520/620 (Wi-Fi)...
My Wi-Fi over Virgin Media Super Hub 40mb/s
The NAV5 Devices update on thefly i.e... No Download then Upload/Install
So I updated the Full Europe Map v1005... Over USB...
Device ready to use 24 Mins
I'm with SteveDUK on this. It's just taken me nearly 5 hours to download the European map update. In the past few weeks I've downloaded similar sized data in less than an hour. Its bad enough that TomTom won't let us have a UK map, and it's even worse that they won't let us download unless the device is attached, but to slug the servers so it takes all day to download is taking the piss.
Thanks Yam. I haven't got a problem with my interntet - other large downloads take minutes. It's only TomTom that takes ages. ONLY TOMTOM - EVERY TIME.
I tried ticking the box and leaving TomTom Connect open. It never downloads anything. The only way to download a Map update is to connect the device and wait anything from 5 to 8 hours.
Oh - and after it's downloaded the map it takes and hour and 40 minutes to upload it to the device. And all that for a data file which is, for me, 90% useless because I never drive outside the UK. I don't want a map of Montenegro or Italy - I just want a UK map.
You seem reluctant to say your internet connection speed and connection method Wi-Fi or Hard Wired
5100_is useless : Oh - and after it's downloaded the map it takes and hour and 40 minutes to upload it to the device
I agree... On my NAV3&4 devices Its the longest part of the process about for me about 40/45 mins... but transfer speed is restricted by the constraints of USB2
The file is decompressed/transferred over USB2 then installed on the device
My NAV5 GO 520/620 (Wi-Fi)...
My Wi-Fi over Virgin Media Super Hub 40mb/s So I updated the Full Europe Map v1005... Over USB...

Try Phoning Tomtom support... Explain you only need the UK&ROI Map they may be able to amend your account
Edit... Correct me if I'm wrong... Didn't the GO 5100 come with Lifetime World Map ???, If yes you should be able to install the UK&ROI Map
The UK&ROI Map is available on my NAV5 (Wi-Fi) devices

Yam- Why are you so keen for this to be my fault? We could save millions on the NHS if they worked like you do.
Patient: “My leg’s broken”
Doctor: “Mine’s OK. Go home and stop complaining.”
I'm not reluctant to talk about my data rates. I said in my first post that other files download ok. I downloaded a 2.5GB file at the weekend in 15 mins. That’s typical.
Yesterday (and today) my data rate was 8MBps at the PC measured with the BT tool and SpeedTest. . Little snitch had the TomTom update downloading at 300-600kBps.
It’s great that you get a great service, but it doesn’t make my experience any better. Every time I update my TomTom it takes 5 to 8 hours. EVERY TIME. It's crap.
Yam - Re maps: The only map options I've got are Europe, Africa, Algeria, Australia, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Israel, Kazakstan, Middle East, New Zealand, Oceania, South America, SE Asia, Taiwan, Tunisia, USA Canada and Mexico, Venezuela.
I have windows firewall and antivirus turned off, my tomtom 5100 won't update, maps are corrupt now, its saying 14 hours and 34 minutes left.
Download speed about 8.26MBPS
It has never updated without an issue - usally taking days of faffing around to get it to work.
Getting fedup to the point I'm going to send it back as unfit for purpose as it's under 5 years old and were still in Europe I think I'll make this Amazons problem and go and by a Garmin at least they work.
Also are your Laptop USB ports USB 2 or USB 3
Although USB 3 is supposed to be backward compatible to USB 2
USB 3 can be problematic check the USB Ports are using the latest Drivers
Paul - it's a TomTom problem, not yours. My downloads take at least 8 hours. My system regularly downloads 2.5GB in about half an hour, so it's not at my end. The other TomTom problem is that they don't give a toss.
YFM - the fact that you don't have a problem isn't a solution for those of us who do. I allow a whole weekend to update my 5100 because, with the app crashing and the servers being so slow, that's how long it can take.
For the last 5 updates I have had to set aside 5 or 6 hours to update my device.
Worst still is that we have two devices in the house so it can take a whole day to get both updated.
I also agree that we should be able to get a UK only map.
Updated my GO 5000 a couple of days ago....

I'm in the US. Obviously a lot of "keep busy work" has taken place in order to keep engineers employed. I bought the newest model last year, and I'm amazed at how long the update is taking. As well, the interface is godawful. I have to type in the whole street before the device finds it, where previous versions were far more intuitive. What the heck is wrong with these people, seriously?
Same with my new rider 550.. Just had the dread update your map pop up. Last time took 13 hours!!!!!!! Luckily its WiFi so I just leave it for a couple of days so it has plenty of time to sluggishly update.
Pathetic servers. I have 200meg speeds and can download a 25g hi RS movie faster than my Tom Tom updates!!!
Just to add to the discussion. I have a new Go Camper version (i.e. 6200). I thought I ws doing something wrong. Having been notified that there was a map update, I happily click on the upload now button, using the Wifi connection. Hours later the download seemed to have stalled. I restarted it a couple of times but then gave up and connected via Drive Connect (as per TomTom instructions). It's still downloading at a snail's pace.
TomTom: if you have a temporary server problem, it would be courteous to your customers to let us know - and when the problem will be fixed. Nothing worse than getting 5hrs into an upgrade, have to stop because you have somewhere to drive, and be told there are no maps on your device!!!!!
Tom Tom: isn't it about time you responded to this thread.
Ps. there is absolutely nothing wrong with my wifi not with my Virgin Media direct ethernet connection to my laptop. What is the problem and when do you expect too fix it?

I'm not saying its your fault, just wondering why there is such vast difference between our experiences using the same Tomtom servers
Win10 64bit
Speed Test... Reports My Virgin Media connection speed tonight at 107.6Mbps
Do you run 'Little snitch' all the time... Port monitoring and some Anti-virus can cause problems with the Tomtom update system

Are you using a PC Desktop or a Laptop is the Computer Hardwire connected to the router or via Wifi ???
ATB YFM
i also have a TomTom Go which updates fine over Wi-fi so I know it’s not internet speed or firewalls.
its most definitely either the 5100 or mydrive causing the issue or your servers

Latest update has been installing for 4 hours and is only 38% through.
So should be done in another 6 hours.
Updates have always been tediously slow.
We usually leave them updating overnight.
There has to be a faster way.
