Connecting app to Adventurer

Just bought a new TomTom Adventurer ,, everything going perfectly setting up the watch until I tried to connect to the sports app. The watch seems to find the app and generates a code to put in but it immediately disappears and goes back to the settings menu, the app is left trying to connect but the watch seems to have given up. I have done a soft reset and a hard reset of watch, deleted and reloaded the app, switched phone on and off, my software is up to date, tried countless times to get it to work. I’m thinking there is has to be a fault with this watch? Can you help? I’d like to be able to use the app rather than connect to computer every time.
