Speed Cameras not showing when phone is not connected

DolmaDolma Posts: 4 [Apprentice Traveler]
I use TomTom on my phone because I can use it offline. The previous app showed speed cameras off line but the new version, TomTom Go doesn't. You need to have a connection. Why has TomTom done this. If I want to use a GPS online there a plenty of free versions. I haven't yet subscribed for TomTom Go as it is offered free for a limited period because I purchased the maps for the old version. But I will have to seriously consider whether I want to use it when I have to start paying if TomTom don't provide speed cameras/danger zones as an off line service as they did in the past. Why has TomTom done this and is not unpopular with most other users?!

Can you download them? its always been unclear to me when they changed this, as they are in the live service, yet im given the option to download and update them. i remember reading that when you dont pay to update the subscription, the old cameras still remain.

however they change things all the time, i bought the 6200 with lifetime updates this time and internal sim card, like you got fed up with paying all the time.

    do did you download them?

Speed Cameras are part of the Live Service and an internet connection is mandatory.

Yes - it is clear that a live service is mandatory. My question really is why, when on the old app it wasn't. As speed cameras are an important service why upgrade and why not use free GPS which do provide speed cameras off line?

    Hi Dolma,

    Welcome to the Community!

GO Mobile is based on a whole new software and many things work differently. The benefit of connected services like TomTom Traffic and Speed Cameras is that the app can fetch updates in real time to make sure the information on your route is current. It actually does this once a minute.

I understand your concern with the internet connection requirement as it could bring you extra costs. The costs are, however, quite small. Please, see the link below for more information.

    TomTom Traffic data usage

Please, post back here if you have any further questions :D

    Cheers, Mikko

    Hi Mikkok,

Thank you for the link to advice from TomTom re data usage. The advice suggests that a one hour daily journey in the rush hour uses 7mb over a month. On the basis of that I turned on my data connection for a one hour journey during rush hour. It used 1.2mb. Over a month that is way over 7mb.

    Thanks,

    Anton

    Hi Anton,

    Thanks for coming back!

Are you sure the consumption figures you're looking at are all from TomTom Services? There might be other apps using internet as well.

If you're sure this is the case, please send your info to Customer Service. They can gather all relevant details and forward to the product team to investigate.

    Thanks, Mikko

    Hi Mikko,

I'm not positive. But this is part of the problem. I'm not sure how to check which apps can use my data connection and I'm not particularly keen to go through all of my apps each time I want to use the speed cameras. If you are able to advise me how I can simply turn off all use of my data service (on an iPhone 7) except the speed camera that would be wonderful but I expect there is no easy way to do it. If there is I'll give it another try and see what the data usage is.

    Thanks,

    Anton

MyDrive sync also increases data consumption, so that 7 MB per month is actually obsolete.

    Hi Anton,

I'm afraid, I'm not familiar with iPhones. Perhaps some other users here can help you with that :D Otherwise you could ask Apple support or consult your phone's documentation.

    Cheers, Mikko

Not sure if the app "No root firewall" is available for your phone, i have it installed on a android phone and tablet, sooo many things connect up, well they use too, now firewall blocks everthing unless you allow.

-App starting page only indicates GPS as necessary(even sends you to the Android gps settings).
-The main menu page does show a rather 'lonely' no traffic icon in the (sub-)top right.
-The Sounds and warnings menu lacks an indication for traffic or no.

PS according to Android gomobile uses 40-57 mb monthly (for my full-time job)

I completely agree with Dolma, what’s the point of having off line maps if speed and safety cameras aren’t available. I just paid for a 12 months subscription and installed TomTom Go on my 9” Android in car head unit. It works great provided the unit is connected to my phone via a hotspot. I purchased this software so I don’t have to connect my head unit to my phone every time I hop in the car. I get the internet connection to receive live traffic and mobile speed cameras etc, however what about the thousands of fixed cameras that never move. Why cant these be included for off line use ? If I’d known about this I would not have paid for a subscription.

    From the Google Store:

    ENJOY
    - Traffic: Insanely accurate traffic information from millions of drivers gives you intelligent routes around traffic.*
    - Safety Cameras: Helping you save money on speeding fines with advanced warning alerts for fixed, mobile, and average speed cameras.*

    * These services require a cell phone connection. Your operator may charge you for the data used, and costs may be significantly higher when used abroad. Check http://tomtom.com/20719 for availability per country. The question of the legality of services to warn for safety cameras is not clear in Germany. You therefore use this service at your own risk. TomTom does not accept any responsibility for the consequences of use of the service in Germany. If user's would just take the time to read what is posted before installing an app it would save a lot of problems......

You are correct, however products should clearly highlight there functionalities and not depend on users reading the fine print to discover the limitations. This description was clearly written to mislead. And it worked, thanks TomTom.

    @Peter747,

    With all do respect:

The info is right in front of anyone to read before you even download the app.

There is no fine print to search for:

See the info on the Google Store

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.gplay.navapp

All is listed there for anyone to read so there should be no questions as to how traffic and speed cams work.

User's can not come back and complain that traffic and speed cams are not working if you are not using a data connection.

It is there in black and white what needs to be done for it to work.

No one is making anyone download the app it is the user's choice to do so.

But you need to read what the app can do and can not do........
