TOMTOM VIA 130: Lifetime Map Upgrade not working?

A friend of mine has a TomTom Via 130 (4eq41 z1230) which - as i understand after a google search - comes with lifetime free map upgrades. I am trying to update it for him (he's a bit of a computer illiterate), but it says "Map Subscription expired" in MyDrive Connect.

My question: is there any way to activate the free upgrades - or am i completely wrong?

    You were supposed to register for the lifetime Map option, you will need to contact Support
