You might also try temporarily removing mapshare corrections. The reason I mention this, is that mapshare may have some blocked roads / delays that may not be valid now.
To re-install MapShare correction into the gps, simple "Update" the gps --- Mapshare will reinstall
Report map errors at http://www.tomtom.com/mapshare/tools/

I live in Wales but had reason to be in East Sussex towards the end of last year.
Whilst out on the open road my TomTom was OK, but once in Brighton it was a liability to the point of being dangerous.
It knew nothing of bus lanes or roads that (at that time of day at least) were barred to cars, or even some one-way streets. This would perhaps be fine to someone who knows the city, but to us on busy roads that we did not know at all it was somewhat scary.
Eventually we turned the sound off and used the thing only to give a vague indication of the location of our destination. Big improvement.
Whilst driving through the outskirts of Brighton it was better but constantly seemed to think we were about 100m behind our actual position, with the result that we missed god knows how many turnings before realising what was going on.
This was consistent too - switching the device off or even a soft reset made no difference.
I have no idea if this was all due to a map problem, ley-lines or some bizarre Brighton-centred 'stupidity' vortex, but it was one of those days where using a paper map (remember those?) and stopping the car to ask directions worked far better than the TomTom.
Ho hum...

As you say Sionyn Tom Tom navigation does have problems giving the best and safest routes for drivers in many areas i regret to say i now have no faith in my own and always seek a AA route finder first.
I have purchased the latest maps after being told by Tom Tom this should resolve the bad maps but i regret the new maps simply proved a total waste of money and made no difference.

Noted John and I'll send this on to the Production Team responsible for the UK for some feedback but let's also realise that it's difficult to respond to a generalised report such as your topic poses save to focus attention on a particular zone. Never mind making a or several Map Share Reporter reports.
One of the most difficult, if not impossible, items of data to include into the road network are lanes that are open only at certain times of the day and other niceties such as bus lanes found in streets in our cities but either I will get back to you, or they might post directly on this one.

There was similar chat on this topic over here so I hope we'll be able to so doing, combine here.
I've contacted our London rep of the Production Team responsible for the UK and he gave me a very comprehensive reply - in essence they find nothing in their database (and compared to the local municipal councils') that would indicate anomalies in the areas you mention. Anomalies just our word for contributed data/reports.
Now that doesn't mean there are NO issues of the type you all report so what to do about them::
@MartinC
When you next make the trip would you mind using a fine-tooth comb on the roadway to see if there is anything along that way that could in any manner affect routing from and to? Please then show that (or these) in a Map Share Reporter report and also let me have the specifics of each of your suspicions (PM or open Forum is fine but I'd need the coords of each/every.. My suspicion is still a Road Category for that connector roadway.
@sionym @Johnnorthfield:
Did the advice make any change in the navigation experiences or have you not had need to visit Brighton, in town, yet?
