flashing red x - failed update - is my device dead?

Tomtom XL IQ routes

tried updating my working gps yesterday, but something went wrong - I received
error writing mctx.dat, so it wouldnt complete update.

I then had flashing red x when unplugged from pc

I have read various suggestions, and what I have tried is the following

1. copy entire contents onto pc for back up (inc hidden folders)
2. tried running chkdsk - wouldnt work
3. removed all files from the unit - except mctx.dat which wouldnt remove
4. run chkdsk which then removed the file and created FOUND file (with .chk files created) on the device

I am now left with a device which has around 1.5meg of .chk files which cant be removed, and therefore I cant reinstate the device file either through tt home or by copying back as there is insufficient memory.

Have I done something fatal??

The device still detects when plugged in and is accessible through explorer.

Responded to you at TTF, I think.

Anyway..........format the unit, don't use quickformat. Restore the backup and try again.

Re: flashing red x - failed update - is my device dead?

@simonpayne: If the backup didn't work out:

Try to run the Clear Flash Tool 3 times:

http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6178/

Further steps if no luck:

Try to do a soft reset first. Either a pin hole on the bottom, or press and hold the on button, until you hear the drum roll (if your device has no pin hole).

If the above worked, happy days, if not, try the one below:

1. Save everything from the device, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16172/

3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again.

4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the devices (also the maps if that didn't download either).
