I've just ordered TomTom XL350. Their website says this series has lifetime map updates, however I have just read on this forum complaints that it doesn't. On the item's description it says "download new and updated maps from TomTom. What is it.....Free or not Free? If it's not, I will cancel my order.

It depends on the exact model number. If your model number ends with a "M", example XL350M or XL350TM then you did get lifetime maps. Also you will find in the box a sheet of paper with the activation code.
If you purchased a model from a supplier that advertised lifetime maps for the model they advertised and you didn't get one of those models then you should return the unit as "not as advertised".
Also if you return or cancel your order you should consider the XL340M or XL340TM. The XL350 has "EASY Menu" which has many features not available compared to the standard menu models like the XL340M.

If you are talking about TomTom's website. Here are the different models of the XL350 series
And from Amazon.com - If you scroll down near the bottom of the screen ( item #10 ) you will see the XL340M for $92.

I just bought XL 350. I have an old TomTom from before. When I hook the device up to my mac, it does not launch. However old tomtom software icon appears on my desktop.
Any suggestions on what I can do?

What version is your Home software. It should be 188.8.131.524
If you don't have a more current one you should update it by using "check for updates" or download a new version from
Also since you have two gps's you will need to set up a second account ( different email address) for the new gps.
You would log in with the new account when you want to update your new gps.

Hey, thanks for your help, you were great.
I decided to delete the older software.
Then I went to the link you gave and downloaded the latest version.
I'm updating the TomTom I just bought. I went out for a drink and now I'm back 2 hours later it's still updating
However, at least somethings happening. It could be that our internet connection is slow, it gets slower in the pm when everyone is home after work.

the process of updating maps might take quite some time as the connection between your device and your computer is also only a USB1.1 connection and therefore the transfer rate is really low. The rest is dominated by your internet connection. Having a broadband connection will definitely help as I've already noticed myself. For getting only a map zone of the Europe map (1.6GB) installed I need about 8-10 hours having only a 384kbit/s internet connection.

Yes, it should be on the lower left corner of a 6X6 inch card with "IMPORTANT- DO NOT DISCARD" printed in red at the top of the card.
