I bought an XL Classic and encountered the same problem.
I contacted the technical service, they told me that is not normal. I did all they asked me to do and it did not worked
I went back to the shop where I bought it. I was playing with different models and the outcome is clear: all the models with the simplified menus behave this way (at least for the planned route part, i did not check the sound settings). So, the conclusion seems to be that this is done on purpose.
I have complained to TomTom, I wait for their reaction.

Did a reset and problem with sound setting resolved. Interesting that you have same experience with routes. Have discovered that the unit I have has another 'feature' which cannot be normal in that the orientation of the display of the route moves about, sometimes up the screen sometimes down/side to side. Have downloaded latest version of s/w from tom tom site but obviously something amiss with satellite link/interpretation. Think the unit will have to be replaced and I think i will say bye bye to tom tom and hello to Garmin
