Re: Unit won't stay on. Keeps restarting.

Hi there,

which device do you have? (http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9508)

Do you have a fully charged battery? If you're not sure, just connect charge it for about 2 hours and then retry.

Did you try turning on your device while connected to a power source?

You may also try to solve your problem by performing a reset. Just press and hold the power button until you hear the drum roll (approx. 15-20 seconds). Maybe afterwards you'll be able again to use your device.

Did you create a backup in the past? If yes you may try to put it back on your device. If not I strongly recommend creating one after getting your device back working (http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.h...).

Which TT application is installed on your device? If it is not the latest, then an update might help.

If you even cannot access your device from your computer then press and hold the power button until after you've heard the drum roll as the device does not only get resetted but you'll also get information about your device displayed.

Regards

Lars.

Re: Unit won't stay on. Keeps restarting.

First try resetting the gps by holding the power button down until you hear a drum beat.

That probably won't fix it but worth a try.

Second connect the gps to your pc and create a backup to protect the map data using this procedure.

http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.h...

Third uninstall and reinstall the application software per this link.

http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9091/kw/restarting

Note: You may have to perform the update procedure a few times because the application software is updated in steps.

So disconnect the gps and restart it. Then connect it back to the computer and have Home update it again. Keep doing this until the Home reports no further updates available. It is important that you restart the gps between update attempts.

Let us know if this helps.... There are some other things that can also be done but try the above steps first.

========================================================

I know this post won't help the OP, but it may help others.

Before doing the uninstall you might like to try this. You already have a backup so it's not really going to hurt.

Using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) navigate to the device, probably E: drive. Find the folder called "ephem".

Can you access it and read the file inside? Yes? Then delete the files.

Get an error when trying to access the folder? Then delete the folder - it is corrupt. Then create a new folder making sure you have all lowercase. Can't delete it - read on.

The files in the folder are to help you find the GPS signal faster. The QuickGPSfix updates are stored there, so it's really not a problem to delete them.

My logic for trying this was that it looked like my device was rebooting as it started to lock onto a satellite.

Every time I connected the device to my PC I was getting an error message saying that there might be a disk error and asked it I wanted to continue without scanning, or fix it. I always continued without scanning. I used the above link to back up, but the folder "ephem" would not copy. Some more research and I found out the folder is for the quick fix only. I tried to delete the folder but I couldn't. Next time I connected the device to the PC I used the Scan & Fix option. A dialog box said the folder was corrupt and it was deleted. Wahhooo! Created the new folder, Connected to TomTom Home, downloaded the update. All is well.

deleted emphemeris as described above...now went to my computer and tried to pull up device and got file is corrupt or unreadable.   This is a tomtom one.  it tries to start over and over, but each time it gets the logo screen with the guy pointing it shuts off.  any suggestions...other than getting a new one?

Re: Unit won't stay on. Keeps restarting.

1. Save everything from the device, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. Use the COMPLETE format, not the quick. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12412/

3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again (in the new TomTom HOME app it is on the second page). At this point you might have to disconnect the device a few times and switch it ON/OFF to enable it to setup some important stuff.

4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the device (also the maps if that didn't download either).
