First make sure your serial number starts with RX; if so then you have the XXL 540. Go to Help/Check for Updates for Home in TTHome to make sure it is the latest version (v2.9.0.2709).
When you try to remove (delete) the current application (should be v9.430), do you remove it using TTHome, Manage my Device? The correct procedure is to go to Manage My Device, then to Items on my Device, Remove app (do not copy to computer), then go to Update my device for the app. Do not allow the map or other updates until you have the final update, which may take several tries. See here: http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/XL-XXL-HOME/FAQ-H
If all else fails, return it (you will need an RMA from TomTom) since yours would be under warranty. This is an excellent model; don't be afraid to get another one.
Keep us posted.

I have a TomTom XXL 550TM and mine does EXACTLY what yours is doing. It happened after I did an update as well. My husband also has a XXL 550TM and is afraid to do any updates after he saw what happened to mine. We've both had major problems with the suction mechanism for the dashboard attachment piece as well. We won't be buying a TomTom again. Very disappointed.

I have removed and reinstalled the application 3 times and it still freezes when restarting.
I need help.

Use Explorer to delete the mapsettings.cfg file from the specific map folder on the unit. Disconnect the unit and restart it.

There is no mapsettings.cfg in map folder. There is a file called mapinfo.dat. Is it the same?

No, it's not. In the Brazil folder, the file isn't there?

The file you mentioned is not there.
The maps I have are USA/Can/Mexico and western Europe. I have the xxl 540s world edition. I looked for that file in both folders and didn't find it.
i'm going to backup everything and format the device. I'll let you know if I solve it.
Thanks.

@Aussie_Jay: I received a new XXL540 today from Amazon and have had the same problem. I followed the instrux at this link: http://www.tomtomforums.com/t24948-fixing-problems
I had to copy the files from the download listed in the link. My unit is now operable at least to the extent of starting up and accepting updates through TTHome. I have not tried to navigate with it yet, but it seems to be behaving normally at this point. Good luck with yours! I'll update here as I try to use my unit.

Yeah, I did the same and now it is working.
Thanks.

Update: I successfully used my XXL540 today after completing last night's fix (see post above). I had an XL model previously (that was stolen about a year ago), and this model works very similarly to my old one. I am pleased with the performance so far. However, I am disappointed with TomTom that this unit is being delivered such that it bricks as soon as you connect it to your computer for the first time to download updates. I am also having trouble with the mount . . . darn thing will not stick to my windshield no matter how hard I press.
