downloaded and installed from tt website latest version. When attempting to use route planner a box comes up entitled 'launch application' and within that box asks to 'choose an application'.  Problem is , none of the choices offered will be accepted. Anyone any ideas as to which application should be chosen?

I think you should choose Internet Explorer, or Firefox for exampe. But you could also just go to http://routes.tomtom.com, it's the very same thing .
