Hey!
I just bought my TOMTOM XXL today and first I charged the device. Then I updated the software via TOMTOM Home. Now when I boot the device, it freezes to the boot screen and nothing happens?!?! Any suggestions?

Try resetting the unit by holding the power button for about 10 seconds till you hear the drum sounds (unless your model has a dedicated reset hole in the bottom in which case use that).

It may need to get additional updates....With the gps turned off plug it into your computer, press and hold the power
button until you hear the drum beat. The gps will connect to your computer without going through the screen that asks you if you want to connect to the computer...Home should startup and check for additonal updates.
Are you running the latest Home Software? You can download the latest version from this link

thanks for the replies. I have done the resetting many times. If I hold the on/off button for about 20 - 30 seconds it will proceed to a black screen with technical details from the device. I can plug the device to computer and TOMTOM home recognizes it. I can also update the software and maps. But when I unplug the device and try to start it, it freezes at tomtom boot screen.

On the boot screen is there a large red X.
What happens if you try to operate your unit from Home's "Operate my device" function?

There isn't a red "X". I cannot operate my XXL via TOMTOM Home.

Youre doing well mate getting something on screen
Ive taken my xl2 iq routes (first ever sat nav) out the box this afternoon and cant get anything on screen. Its charging up through the car charger , ive had it charging through the laptop and i now have it charging through a HTC charger. Battery seems fine though as i am getting the tomtom drum roll when switching on and off regularly although sometimes does nothing and i have to reset through the button on the base of the unit , still only a faint light as it kicks in and black / blank screen
Ive installed home with no problems and it installed a couple of unrelated updates , saying no new updates now so is connecting to and communicatiing with the device
Is it possible that my battery is so low it wont give me anything on display ? Or should i have enough ? Im looking for any ideas before i go back to the store tomorrow and make an idiot of myself
How do i get to this "operate my device" through Home that i read about elsewhere on the forums ?

Ok, now before we go any further you will need to create a backup of the memory in your gps.
Use windows explorer to create a new folder on your pc hard drive. You can call it anything, like Tomtom_backup.
Next you need to enable "show hidden files and folders" in windows explorer. In explorer go to the the tab Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Hidden files and folders and select show hidden files and folders.
Connect your gps to the pc and turn it on. If you don't get the "connect to computer" message then press and hold the power button until you hear the drum beat. When the gps resets it will automatically connect to the computer.
Next you want to open the tomtom drive located under Devices with removable Storage in windows explorer.
Select all the files and folders and copy them to the folder you created on the hard drive.
It takes about 30 min. to complete.
When you get your gps backed up let me know and we will continue from there.
You might want to let me know what model gps you have?
What pc operating system you are using?
Was the gps working ok before you updated it?

I went to the store where I bought the XXL and told them what was the problem. They gave me a brand new device instead fixing the old one. I charged the new one for about two hours and started it. It works just fine. So the first one was probably just defected. I will update the software, maps etc. in a couple of days. I will get back to you if something odd happens.
Thank you all anyways.

Be sure you backup you gps before you try to update it. You can use the backup routine in the Home software.
