The best they can offer is submitting something to customer service, and I can expect a response in 3-5 business days. Has this happened to you too?

And you have no backup??? And they wanted you to format the unit without having one??
If so, they are true idiots............

They had me backup the maps first, and a few other files. Otherwise nothing. And now when I turn it on, there's a large red circle with a white X in it on the screen, which tech told me means it is basically dead.

What model do you have. And a little more details as to what things have been done so far. Also what happened in the beginning to cause you to call customer service.
The red X means there is no functioning application in the gps....

Well, if you have backed up the map, do this...........
Connect to Home and a new application should be offered. Install and disconnect properly from Home using the Device disconnect icon.
It should boot to 'no maps found'.
If so, and the backup of the map was made using Home, connect to Home and do a restore of the map.

Connected to Home. No new application was offered. When I checked My Computer, it just shows the device as a removable storage device titled "Internal."

Does Home recognise the device as connected ? Did you check "Update my device" ? Did you also check "Add voices, maps..." / " items on my computer" / "Application" for a software version ?

Okay, managed to get in home and get through to the "No Maps Found" screen. Thanks for your help with that!
The map backup wasn't saved in home, but rather on my hard drive. What process should I use to move them into the TomTom? Can I just click and drag?

Simply copy the map folder to the root of the internal volume of the device.
