Stats from Amazon.

My GOD 56 1* recommendations....That tells you something is seriously wrong with the equipment being built.

My GOD 130 3* or below out of 374 reviews??? How can I even consider purchasing a TOMTOM again.

A TOMTOM one lover....

Anyone think it was worth purchasing and why?

Hi,

I think the main problem with the XL2 is that it is a stripped version of the XL and many users expected it to have even more functionality than the XL. If you can still get a new one I'd get a XL LIVE if I were you and would be looking for such a device as the XL LIVE comes with complete functionality like itineraries, full menu and not easymenu and especially with the LIVE services which are free for the 1st year.
Otherwise I'd directly go for the new generation of devices connecting via the MyTT application. The recommendations for those devices are usually only bad due to the issues still existing with the support applicaiton. The devices themselves are well accepted by most users.

Regards
Lars.

I'll have a look at the XL Live device instead.

Cheers

Since checking that one is even worse than the XL stats...

69 at 3* and below. Thats nearly half of the revies says it's average or below.

I think it might be better to have a look at Garmin.

Hi,

I can only tell you that I'm very happy with my XL LIVE. Very nice with HD Traffic, very good routing, very exact ETAs even on longer journeys, you've got the ability to add itineraries that are planned via Google Maps or Google Earth, you can easily install own or community content to your device, the device is accessible via Explorer and bakcing up is quite easy.

Maybe if I write on I'll find more positive aspects but in the end it is up to you which device you'll purchase. I recommend though not relying only on the recommendations on Amazon but to try different devices in an electronics store to get a feeling for the device and then to select that one that pleases you most.

You usually don't know if the bad recommendations on Amazon come from a minor item not pleasing the user or if it is really a massive down point. Only if the user wrote a detailed review as well that is possible.

Regards
Lars.

Good points Lupus1 but these reviews are higher than average in fact dire recommendations. So there must be something in it unless a third of the Users are absolutely clueless. Which is possible but not probable.

I don't know at the moment, I'll give it a while and puchase at a later date I think.Giving it more time for better reviews...

Re: How could I possibly purchase a New TOMTOM IQ XL2 with these sort of recommendations.

Hi,

I really recommend you try out different devices in an electronics store. I think one of the most important points is your feeling for the user interface. Each brand has its own interface and so people changing between brands may post a negative review first as all items are at a different place than they're used. That way the menu of another brand's device might appear very confusing and not well structured. I don't exclude myself from that. Having mostly used TTs until now I find devices from Garmin, Navigon or Falk more confusing and don't like the interface as much as TT's interface.

The road data is in Europe nearly the same. All companies have a good coverage of main Europe with varying advantages depending on the specific countries. So what is left is the user interface and the options being offered by the different devices as well as their specifications.

A simple interface looks different for each user. Therefore you have to try which interface pleases you most. Afterwards I'd check which devices of which brand offer those features you'd like to have.

Also to be kept in mind is that all devices connecting via the TT HOME application are the older generation. The newer generation connects only via the MyTT application. So those devices offering itineraries at the moment will be the first ones to not being supported any more beside those ones already not being supported. Possible alternatives to the XL are the Go x50 devices which are the high-end devices of their generation. Those devices also offer a card slot so you'll be able to extend the memory to be able to fit larger maps onto them as well. The XL only offers 2GB internal memory which makes it necessary to use map zones instead of one complete map of Europe. I use the Northern zone including the countries I think I need most probably. In that zone the UK, BeNeLux, France and Germany and some other countries are included. Still with a Go x50 you could insert an SDHC card with 4GB capacity and install the complete Europe map on it.

Lars.
