I took a business card, folded it in half and that seems to work for me.
Great that I now have to use a hack to make my phone work...

iPhone 4S does only get energy here when I put folded paper between holder and iPhone.
Bluetooth connection doesn't work... Can't connect.

I am so glad I found this forum question. I had the same problem. Phone not charging and no audio out. I contacted TomTom and they said that it is not compatible and wont be as the car kit is old! (I bought mine this summer). I phoned apple and they said send a letter to the apstore. I did that and I had just finished writing a negative review on the ap store and was about to give up when I found a link to this page.
I placed a business card folded in two behind the iphone 4s and instant success.
Yet again I am amazed that a company like Tom Tom can be so slow to react. It's not rocket science. On the launch day, buy a phone put it in the cradle, design a new plastic insert and sell it on the web site, or at least put a work around on the web site.
Thanks to everyone who posted answers

My iphone 4s works perfectly fine with the tomtom car kit. I'm using the official iphone 4 rubber adapter.

Rubber adapter? I had a plastic one that came with the purchase. Can you tell me where the rubber one came from please.

The adapter that came with my Car Kit worked fine with my new iPhone 4s. I don't remember if it was rubber or plastic, but maybe that is the issue, deferring manufactures.

I just checked and yes, the adapter I have is rectangle hard rubber. It's pretty thick too and came with my tomtom car kit. The rubber adapter is cut on the back side to fit the tomtom car kit and is aligned perfectly. I think people that are having problems are due to having a smaller adapter.

I took the little brochure that came with the car kit explaining the adapter for the iphone 4. I folded it over twice which gave a thickness of 8 sheets of paper. I placed it between the plastic adapter and the back of the phone which in effect thickened the adapter. Everything works fine.

My iphone 4S didnt work either . I noticed that the bottom plug cannot enter deeply enough because the cradle was designed for the curved edge of the iPhone 3 and the square bottom profile of the 4S juts out more than that curve of the iPhone 3. So I got out my drexel ( a hand file or hacksaw might work too) and filed away behind the raised metal plug to make a more right-angle nisch behind it. Now it fits, connects, and everything is perfect.
