This appears to be a connection issue between iTunes and the device. I was researching further for you and there are some options you can try.
* Change the USB port the iPhone is connected to the computer with
* Let the iPhone charge sufficiently before trying to access it through iTunes
* Turn the iPhone on and off
Hopefully these items should at least resolve it.

Thanks for your reply, interestingly none of the tips you gave worked at all.
I had already charged the iphone fully, and restarted it as a matter of course before resorting to asking for help. Changing the USB port did nothing.
The problem was eventually resolved by redownloading and reinstalling the tom tom W europe app.
